Renewable Energies for Morocco

Morocco is regarded as the most stable country in North Africa and is seen as an attractive business location thanks to its proximity to Europe and its active reform policy. The reform plans aim to improve the cooperation between the economy and vocational training institutions and thus combat the high level of youth unemployment.

In the course of the reforms, the range of vocational training on offer is to be diversified and the content at public universities revised and streamlined, thus adapting it to the needs of the local labour market. Three vocational training centres have been set up throughout the country in Tangier, Oujda and Quarzazate in order to achieve better interaction between business and vocational training centers. These vocational training centres focus on the field of renewable energies.

Ambitious Goals for a Clean Future for Morocco

After Morocco was completely dependent on the import of fossil fuels for a long time, they have now discovered the enormous potential of renewable energies there. Morocco’s ambitious goals include a 42% share of renewable energies in the country’s electricity mix by 2020 and a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. With the support of KfW Development Bank the world’s largest solar park is currently being built near Quarzazate. In the long term it is even hoped to be able to export green electricity abroad.

Lack of Teachers in Training

The three newly created training centers play an important role in the Moroccan energy strategy. One of the reasons why they were established was to ensure that sufficient skilled workers could be trained locally. The number of applicants has been growing rapidly for years, so that today there are 140 applicants for each training place. However, it is a great challenge for the institutes to find enough suitable teachers so that they currently have to train the next generation of teachers themselves first.

Concepts for Practical Vocational Training by Christiani

Considering the reforms in vocational training and the country’s energy strategy towards renewable energies, Christiani was able to make a major contribution to the success of this project with his practice-oriented teaching concepts in the field of renewable energies. During the project Christiani equipped the training centre for renewable energies and energy efficiency in Tangier with training stands, didactic materials, a training concept and on-site training. Thus the high-quality teaching equipment and training concept from Christiani will in future be an integral part of vocational training in the field of renewable energies in Morocco.
